Thanks to the generosity of Joe Carlini, B.M.E. 1984, vice chair of Catholic University’s Board of Trustees, and Christine Carlini, B.S.E. 1986, the University will break ground in early 2018 on new outdoor field space by the Raymond A. DuFour Athletic Center. The new Carlini Field — named in honor of the donors — will be at the center of strengthening the athletic and recreational programming at the University.
“This gift will have a direct impact on our athletes as well as the entire student population,” said Sean Sullivan, associate vice president and athletics director. “Our varsity program will benefit from enhanced practice and game day experiences, and the entire campus community will reap the rewards of modern recreational spaces and opportunities.”
The gift will enable the installation of a multi-use, competition-grade turf field. In addition to the creation of Carlini Field, the plan includes a competition-level lighting system, a press box, and game day seating for 700. The Carlini Field area will also include parking lot construction.
“Athletics is the ‘front porch to the University’ for so many Catholic University students,” said Joe Carlini. “Creating spaces which enhance the student experience is vital to Catholic University’s efforts to attract students and better serve the current campus population.”
“Joe and Christine Carlini’s generosity will directly benefit our scholar athletes, who make up a significant portion of our undergraduate population,” commented University President John Garvey. “The Carlini Field will make a remarkable difference in the lives of the students and contribute to the University's mission to form the whole person.”
The Carlinis’ gift adds to the $2.5 million renovation of the DuFour center, marking $4 million in University trustee investment in athletics this year.
“Joe and Christine Carlini have helped to set in motion the vision we have for the future of Cardinal Athletics and recreational opportunities on campus,” said Sullivan. “Making renovations and additions to indoor and outdoor spaces in an effort to provide current and future students with the best facilities possible is a priority for our University. We are so grateful to the Carlinis for helping to make this a reality.”
